Because
Scotland is Magical
If
you’re a person close to nature, if you dream to galop in vales of
green and drink water from wonderful waterfalls, then do not look
further ! Outlander is made for you. This Ronald D. Moore serie
takes us to Bagpipe wonderland from the first scenes

But
Scotland can’t only be restricted to its green and mysty sceneries,
it is also its accent and the character of its people. And for all
those reasons, we’d love to travel back to the 18th century with
Claire… Well yes, only if we don’t have to live in times of war
or run into Black Jack.
Because
of its music
If
the landscapes keeps you dreaming, the music is also a big part of
the magic. We owe it to Bear McCreary who had already worked with
Ronald D. Moore. Composer for many tv show (Black Sails, The Walking
Dead, Battlestar Galactica) but also for movies and video games,
McCreary says he’s always been passionate about Scotland. With
bagpipes, penny whistles and other Scottish folk instruments in the
background, you’ll travel back to 18th century Scotland. The
melancholic or frentzied sounds will make you live Claire’s
adventures, and all this while sitting in your couch. What’s more
to ask ?
Because
of Claire
This
serie’s main character is a woman and the story is told through her
point of view and her adventures (or her misfortune). Claire is a
nurse during WWII, making her one of the women who fought for her
country. Therefore, Claire has a sturdy character and already is a
woman ahead of her time, even in 1945. All of this makes her even
more interesting once living in time where those things can be
dangerous for a woman. We could expect a tomboy but the writing and
the perfomance of Caitriona Balfe make her a sensible and classy
woman. Bravo !
Because
its not just a love triangle

main characters : Claire surrounded by Jamie and Frank. You must
be thinking « yeah yeah, I see… It’s just another show
about a love triangle that takes away any kind of originality or
story-plot. No thanks. ». Well you’re wrong, it isn’t just
a show about a love triangle (or a square or other geometrical
forms). Yes love is one of the themes in Outlander, yes Claire is
torn between two men, but the « intrigue » isn’t just
that. It’s also a historical serie, about the 20th and 18th
century, for the main historical events but also about daily life.
Because
it’s close to the book
Well
the title summaries it pretty well. I’ve rarely seen a serie or
movie so close to the original books (to confirm with season 2). This
so good adaptation is due to the creator’s respect for the original
work but also to Diana Gabaldon (author) being a crew member.
Because
of the actors
From
the first moments of the pilot, the actors set the bar high. The
exchange between Tobias Menzies and Caitriona Balfeare touching and
gentle. But we have not seen anything yet until Sam Heughanis on the
screen. The alchemy between the two main actors is breathtaking.
During some of their scenes, you can feel the (almost sexual) tension
between those two. Also we shouldn't overlook the rest of the cast,
like Duncan Lacroix (Murtagh) who brings material to his character or
Graham McTavish (Dougal) and Gary Lewis (Colum) explosive duo.
However,
the rare and raw talent of Tobias Menzies cannot be ignored. His
performance as Black Jack always gives me goose bumps. And the way he
can play both the tender loving husband and the sadistic captain
makes us admire the actor even more !
Because of the clothes

Landscape, musique, that's all
very well but what would be a historical show without period
costumes ? Or rather what would Outlander be without Terry
Dresbach ? Ronald D. Moore's wife and costume designer on the
show, she gives us the result of a remarkable research work.
Caitriona Balfe is very chic in her 20th century clothing,
magnificient in her 18th century dresses showing off her
long and delicate neck. Do not worry, the men look great as well :
Tobias Menzies is very classy as an Oxford teacher, but he's also
spooky when he's wearing his military costume. As for Sam Heughan,
come on... we all watch to see what's under the kilt.
Because
it's a mix of genres
Drama,
Romance,Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Historical, Outlander is all this. You do
not believe me ? Then check it out for yourself and try to fit
this show in a category. This mix of genres is the reason why we
never get bored and everybody can find something he or she likes in
it.
Because gingers are sexy
Sam Heughan proves you can be
ginger and sexy. And I find it reason enough to love this show.
Everybody knows gingers are the most beautiful people on earth.
Wait... Am I the only one to think that ?
